Then we have breakfast and go to the Chemal village, walk along the bank of the Katun, visit the church on the Patmos island, go through the souvenir shops at the Chemal hydroelectric station, then go to the Valley of Mountain Spirits with a beautiful view of the Katun River.
The village Chemal (southern altai "chymal" - an anthill) was established in 1842. In 1849, a missionary camp was formed, which has since controlled the development of Chemal. At the end of the XIX century, the village became known as a balneal resort. Tomsk intellectuals and scientists came here, V. Sapozhnikov, G. N. Potanin, V. Ya. Shishkov and others visited it.
In Soviet times, in the 1930s, a resort was established for party and state leaders, as well as their families. With the participation of M.I. Kalinin's wife, Ekaterina Ivanovna, a tuberculosis sanatorium was created.
At the beginning of the 20th century, from Chemal, one of the oldest Church of Gorny Altai was transferred to a secluded rocky island in the middle of the raging Katun. The island was a favorite place for prayers of St. Macarius (Nevskiy), who served for many years in the Chemalskiy camp of the Altai spiritual mission, who later became the metropolitan of Moscow and Kolomna. At the turn of the XX-XXI centuries Church was restored by journalist and photographer Viktor Pavlov with saved drawings from Moscow.
After lunch at the restaurant in the Elanda village, we go to the Oroktoyskiy bridge, admire Teldekpenskiy rapids, walking along the bank of the Katun.
The Teldekpenskiy rapids are located approximately 38 km from Chemal, just below the mouth of the Edigan River. Here the Katun River crosses the rocky spurs of the Kuminskiy Range. These are one of the most beautiful and extensive rapids on the Katun, we can admire it on the Oroktoiskiy suspension bridge. The rapids are in a long rocky corridor, which is a deep tectonic crack formed in the limestones of cambrian. The width of the Katun in these places is from 20 to 40 m, and the depth, according to some, is 70 m the height of the black rock walls is 5-10 m, the area of the Teldekpen 1 is the narrowest point of the Katun - the width here is only 20 m.
